Architectural photographer. Scottish.
Trained as an architect, I was a partner in an architectural practice for many years. My photographic interest is in modern architecture in (mostly) urban scenes. I have shot on film but now use digital imagery. The photos show form, colour and light at specific times and seasons and hint at something of the complexity of the buildings. In addition to showing the buildings’ formal expression and physical context, architectural photographs contain clues to each structure’s programme, budget, societal and environmental influences and legislative context.
My photos have been published in books, in the architectural press (Architectural Review, Architects’ Journal, Dezeen), news media and various other outlets (including unlikely ones such as an Australian government report and an Italian calendar). They have also been included in exhibitions (such as Hans Hollein transForms at the Centre Pompidou, 2025). I have contributed images to the archive of the Technische Universität Graz, and I have also restored and prepared others’ images for publication (most recently ‘Metropole Wien’ published by Birkhäuser).
Most of the images shown, along with many others, are available at higher resolution through the alamy.com website (use the filter for contributor: woolver).
